BILUM AND BASKET WEAVING

Ranu has provided bilum weaving sessions at the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Woodford Folk Festival.  These bilum classes invite participants to spend time sitting in circle with other Papua New Guinean women to share in the experience of community that is created when women sit together and weave.  The Bilum is unique to Papua New Guinea and is commonly used by PNG women to carry babies, take vegetables to market, as handbags and dress. This workshop is suitable for a maximum of 8 participants per instructor.

Ranu can also work in collaboration with other Pasifika artists to provide weaving workshops using pandanus leaves, raffia and ribbon. See our Partners page.  Contact us to ask for more information.

BEADING

Wearing adornments or bilas, when performing the music and dance of my Papua New Guinean (PNG) culture, has been an important part of my cultural expression. These workshops are designed for primary age children and older. Create a beautiful beaded armband or bracelets. Then spend time exploring and talking about some of the beautiful bilas and adornments worn in Papua New Guinea and around the Pacific.

Weaving Cultural Stories acknowledges the traditional custodians on whose land we live, work, play and learn.

We acknowledge the cultural and ancestral knowledge of these custodians. Their knowledge and care has been instrumental in protecting our beautiful, diverse lands and waterways for thousands of years.

We acknowledge how these ancestors, have woven their stories of culture into the minds and souls of those Leaders and Elders present today, who continue to weave their stories and knowledge into the hearts and souls of their future Leaders and Elders.
